That's basically par for course.

Well, the tragedy surrounding Treyvon Martin -- or rather, the reactions of the surrounding community -- pretty much answered that question for the U.S.. And that answer is 'yes'.

Now comes a follow-up question. How do we pry away these exploding mechanical jelqers from the hands of our immature and hysterical populace? Considering that there are other issues that need attending to that could be derailed by that enemy of democracy known as the single-issue voter, I think the tragic answer is 'we're not even going to consider that for a few dozen years'.

In short, your entire post is dismissive of not merely my intelligence, but my agency. And I don't mean agency as a player within one of your games, I mean my agency as a person. Zimmerman was kind of a racist asshole cop wannabe with a prior history of assault, domestic violence, and calling the cops on every African American he saw in his neighborhood. He's basically the worst type of person you can put a gun in the hands of, because he's a fucking violent paranoid moron. And that's true of most people who seek carry permits; you have to be a pretty stupid person to think you're ever going to actually need or use that permit, and that means you're going to do stupid things once you get it.

Zimmerman's actions weren't why I bumped this thread. Rather, it was the actions of the Florida police and the legislatures' hysterical retrenching of the whole Stand Your Ground crap. People like Zimmerman are assholes but are also inevitable in any country; what's more important is how people treat the incident and consider the proximate causes.
